Our projects in The Gambia
Gambia
Gambia is the smallest country on the African mainland and is strongly shaped by the course of the Gambia River. Large sections of the population live in rural areas and are directly dependent on agriculture and fishing.
At the same time, the country faces key challenges in the areas of energy supply, infrastructure and economic development. Decentralised and sustainable solutions therefore play a crucial role.
VoltaViewAfrica is currently active in several projects in The Gambia, ranging from energy infrastructure and cold chains to sustainable mobility solutions.
Gambia at a glance
- Human Development Index (HDI): low, ranked 174th in 2023, (~0.52)
- Population: approx. 2.7 million, very young and growing rapidly
- Access to electricity and food: limited, particularly in rural areas
- Income: approx. USD 880 per capita (low income level)
- Economy: dominated by agriculture, services and fishing
Challenges
Sustainable infrastructure
Access to reliable energy remains limited, particularly in rural areas.
Sustainable mobility
Transport and infrastructure are often inefficient and dependent on fossil fuels.
Economic development
Limited infrastructure hinders value creation and stable income opportunities.

Opportunities
The Gambia offers opportunities for the expansion of decentralised energy supply and basic infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. Solutions that function without a stable electricity grid can be implemented directly on the ground and expanded step by step.
VoltaViewAfrica is addressing this through several projects. The focus is on energy infrastructure, cold chains and sustainable mobility that can be practically utilised in everyday life.
The aim is to establish functioning systems that can be operated locally and are sustainable in the long term
