Sustainable infrastructure
The energy supply in many regions of The Gambia is not guaranteed across the board. In rural areas in particular, there is often a lack of access to reliable electrical infrastructure.
This affects households as well as small businesses and public institutions. At the same time, the need for stable, long-term solutions is growing.
Against this backdrop, VoltaViewAfrica is committed to establishing decentralised energy infrastructure at various locations across the country.
Decentralised energy on site
The projects in The Gambia are based on so-called Powerhouse systems, which enable an independent energy supply. They combine solar energy with battery storage and provide electricity where there is no stable grid.
The installed systems remain in operation and are used locally. The experience gained from these projects is incorporated into the further development of similar initiatives.
Our objectives
The aim of the project is to improve access to reliable energy and create stable supply structures.
Decentralised systems enable an independent power supply and open up new opportunities for local use and economic activities.
Our support
In cooperation with the RES programme, three Powerhouse systems were installed as a pilot project in The Gambia. The systems combine photovoltaics, battery storage and control technology, enabling an independent local energy supply.
This addresses various areas of application: in addition to decentralised energy and drinking water supply in rural regions – such as in fishing villages – the systems also serve as a basis for practical training programmes in collaboration with the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET) in Serekunda.
The installed systems remain in operation and are used locally.
