SodiumX Energy Storage

Decentralised electricity storage for a stable energy supply

Energy generation alone is not enough if electricity cannot be stored reliably. Energy storage is crucial for a continuous supply, particularly in regions without a stable grid infrastructure.

Sodium X was developed to bridge precisely this gap. The systems enable generated energy to be stored locally and made available as and when needed.

In cooperation with:

Sodium-ion as an alternative

Sodium X is based on sodium-ion battery technology and represents an alternative to conventional lithium-ion systems.

The systems are characterised by a long service life, stable performance under varying conditions and robust everyday use.

The systems are characterised by a long service life with several thousand charge cycles, as well as robust performance under varying conditions. At the same time, they enable local, off-grid energy storage.

Application

The batteries can be charged directly via solar containers, for example at the Luchelele Living Lab. As a result, the energy supply is based entirely on renewable sources and can be used on-site, for instance to power electric boats.

The underlying technology is being developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI). This ensures that the latest research findings are directly incorporated into systems deployed under real-world conditions. The focus is not only on development, but also on practical applicability in existing projects.

Technical characteristics

The Sodium X systems are based on sodium-ion battery technology and are designed for use in decentralised energy systems.

Typical characteristics of the systems:

– several thousand charge cycles (up to approx. 5,000)
– stable performance even at high temperatures
– high
operational safety – low dependence on critical raw materials

The systems are designed to function reliably under real-world operating conditions and to be used over the long term.

Sodium X is not intended as a stand-alone technology, but as part of an integrated energy system. In combination with solar energy and local infrastructure, this creates a seamless supply chain encompassing generation, storage and consumption.

The systems link different applications together and enable energy to be deployed flexibly where it is needed – independently of existing grids.

Why energy storage is crucial

Renewable energy alone is not enough if it is not available when it is needed. Energy storage is therefore a key component of a stable and reliable supply.

Sodium X enables energy to be stored locally and used as and when required. This makes projects less dependent on external infrastructure and ensures they can be operated stably in the long term.
