Tanzania: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development
Tanzania is one of the most populous countries in East Africa and is characterised by great scenic and ecological diversity. At the same time, the country faces key challenges: growing energy demand, limited infrastructure and the sustainable management of natural resources.
Lake Victoria, in particular, plays a key role. It provides a livelihood for millions of people – through fishing, transport and the local economy, for example. At the same time, the ecosystem is under increasing pressure.
Tanzania at a glance
– Human Development Index (HDI): low (165 out of 193 as of 2023)
– Population growth: rising sharply by 40% between 2015
and 2025– Access to electricity and food: limited
, particularly in rural areas– Economy: heavily dependent on agriculture and natural resources
Challenges
Energy and infrastructure
Access to reliable energy is limited, particularly in rural areas.
Environmental pressure
Overfishing, pollution and climate change are putting pressure on ecosystems.
Population growth
Rising demand for resources, infrastructure and jobs.

Opportunities
Despite these challenges, Tanzania offers great potential for sustainable solutions, particularly in the field of renewable energy and decentralised infrastructure. Local approaches that combine technology with practical application can create stable and resilient systems in the long term.
Against this backdrop, VoltaViewAfrica is implementing various projects in Tanzania. We are now involved in five projects covering a range of sectors – from energy infrastructure and education to sustainable mobility.
The aim is to develop solutions that work locally and can be integrated into existing structures in the long term.
