Field
Basic energy supply
Kibumba Island is situated in the western part of Lake Victoria in Tanzania. The island is accessible only by boat, which makes the construction and maintenance of technical infrastructure considerably more difficult.
However, stable supply structures are essential for the daily lives of the island’s inhabitants and for public institutions such as the primary school and nursery. Energy supply and basic infrastructure play a vital role in education, economic activities and the daily life of the community.
Against this backdrop, VoltaViewAfrica is committed to building sustainable infrastructure on Kibumba Island.
Our objectives
The aim of the project is to permanently improve the supply situation on Kibumba Island and thereby create more stable conditions for daily life, education and local economic activities.
At the same time, the project aims to demonstrate how decentralised energy systems can be deployed even in remote regions, thereby opening up new possibilities for infrastructure use.
Our support
In 2019, an off-grid energy system was installed on Kibumba Island in collaboration with local and international partners. The power plant is based on a 12 kWp solar system and a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery storage unit, and supplies the village, the primary school and the nursery with electricity.
In 2021, the project was expanded to include a water treatment system that supplies the island community with clean drinking water.
In addition, a sewing workshop was set up, offering women on the island the opportunity to start a small business and generate their own income.
