Sustainable Restoration: Securing the Future for the Women’s Cooperative

Despite the successful transition to solar-powered propulsion, the oyster fishers faced a critical challenge by the end of 2025: the traditional wooden canoes had deteriorated so severely due to weather conditions that they were virtually unusable. Thanks to a generous donation from the Ziethen Parish (Martinsmarkt), immediate action was possible. In December 2025, the boats were comprehensively refurbished and sealed with a specialized coating of fiberglass mats and epoxy resin. Since January 2026, the entire fleet has been safely back in operation. This vital restoration ensures the long-term livelihood of the 32 fishers, once again enabling them to support their families through efficient and environmentally friendly work in the mangrove ecosystems.
